The Seattle Seahawks' running game has been one of the weak points of the offense through the first six games. Emanuel Wilson has been decent at times, but fumbling has been a problem for the group overall, and red zone conversions have mostly been lacking. This is where Zach Charbonnet's injury update comes in. (The RB injured his knee in last season's playoffs.)
The more powerful part of the RB duo of the last three seasons (Kenneth Walker had power but was the speedier of the two), Charbonnet is excellent in short-yardage situations, especially close to the goal line. Last season, he scored 12 rushing TDs and is exactly what Seattle needs. There is a decent chance he sees some playing time against the Kansas City Chiefs.
According to what head coach Mike Macdonald told the media on Monday, "Zach is going to have a full week's worth of reps, so that's exciting, and there's a possibility that you could see him on Sunday in some capacity, so that's exciting."
Zach Charbonnet has a decent chance to return for the Seattle Seahawks in Week 7
To be fair, Macdonald does temper expectations a bit. The team hopes that Charbonnet can play, and if he does play, he will likely be limited.
Still, any form of the running back is better than what the Seahawks have gotten from that part of the offense so far. If he only sees a few reps, those could come when he is most needed: Picking up 3rd-and-shorts or close to the Chiefs' end zone. His ability to bulldoze his way through would-be tacklers is excellent.
Macdonald also delivered some other good news. Right guard Anthony Bradford is expected to practice after returning from the injured reserve with hip and knee issues. That means the team believes he can start against the Chiefs, and that should help the offensive line overall.
As much as many fans and pundits have said Seattle needs to replace Bradford, and that still might be true, he is the best option the team has right now at right guard. Beau Stephens and Christian Haynes have rotated in his absence, but with inconsistent results.
In Week 6 against the Denver Broncos, for instance, Stephens allowed three quarterback pressures while Haynes allowed five. The safe assumption is that while Bradford isn't the perfect guard, he probably wouldn't have allowed eight pressures in the game.
The Seattle Seahawks are currently 3-3, and the schedule is not an easy one. A couple of more losses in the first half of the season could make getting back to the playoffs difficult. Maybe getting Zach Charbonnet back and almost certainly seeing the return of Anthony Bradford should help the team's cause.
