The Seattle Seahawks potentially being interested in veteran edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney should come as a surprise to no one. The real question is why wouldn't Seattle be kicking the proverbial tires on possibly signing Clowney?
He already has a connection to the Pacific Northwest and, more recently, current Seattle head coach Mike Macdonald, and each for different reasons. Clowney played for the team in 2019, and he was quite effective, even if his number of sacks (three) wasn't exactly impressive on the page. He spent a season under Macdonald with the Baltimore Ravens in 2023 and was excellent.
According to NFL insider Aaron Wilson, the edge rusher visited with the Cleveland Browns on Wednesday, and he has drawn interest from the Houston Texans (Clowney has a home in Houston) and the Seahawks. No mention was made of an impending visit with Seattle.

Of course, general manager John Schneider would be interested. He has traded for the player before and attempted to do the same in 2020, but Clowney signed with the Tennessee Titans for a bit more money. Clowney is happy to keep signing one-year deals, as he did with Tennessee, and has only spent consecutive seasons with a team once since 2018 (he was in Cleveland in 2021 and 2022).
While he is now 33 years old, he hasn't diminished in performance. Last season with the Dallas Cowboys, he had 8.5 sacks and 12 tackles for loss. The latter was his best number since 2021. Clowney is still a very good player who is excellent at quarterback pressure, but elite against the run.
He is a true three-down edge rusher, and he has proven to be a fantastic fit in Macdonald's scheme. In Baltimore three seasons ago, he had 9.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and 23 total quarterback pressures. He would obviously be a natural fit for the Seattle Seahawks in 2026, too. He wasn't outwardly unhappy with the team in 2019 and understands what Macdonald needs.
While Seattle signed veteran edge rusher Dante Fowler Jr. in free agency to help offset the loss of Boye Mafe in free agency, and the Seahawks' edge rush group is at least four-deep with quality, no team is going to say no to another high-end player at the position, especially if the price involved is correct.
Due to his age and penchant for not being a long-term option with any team he signs with, his market value isn't going to be exceedingly high. According to Spotrac, Jadeveon Clowney should only expect a one-year deal that pays him $5.7 million. The Seahawks should jump at that opportunity.
According to Over the Cap, Seattle still has $25,463,039 left to spend in free agency. Any possible new extensions with defensive tackle Leonard Williams or cornerback Devon Witherspoon wouldn't affect that number negatively, as the deals wouldn't go into effect in 2026. A Williams extension could actually give Seattle more cash. Either way, the Seahawks have the money to sign Clowney.
Doing so shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. He has ties to the team and head coach and has proven as recently as 2025 that he is still productive. Adding him gives Mike Macdonald another very good player. Seattle just needs to get a deal done.
