The Seattle Seahawks lost edge rusher Boye Mafe in free agency to the Cincinnati Bengals and replaced him with veteran Dante Fowler Jr. Even after that signing, general manager John Schneider hinted that other edge rush moves could be made.
One logical fit is adding Jadeveon Clowney, as Clowney has played for Seattle before (2019) and head coach Mike Macdonald (2023, when the player and coach were both with the Baltimore Ravens). That addition could still happen, though one analyst believes the edge rusher could end up with the team Seattle defeated in the Super Bowl last season.
Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox suggests that Clowney signs with the New England Patriots, presumably on a one-year deal. That is all that the defensive end seems to sign anymore, which makes sense, as most teams probably don't want to risk giving the 33-year-old player a longer deal than that.
Former Seattle Seahawks edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney suggested for the New England Patriots
He is still very good, though. With the Dallas Cowboys in 2025, he had 8.5 sacks and continued to play elite run defense. That latter skill has always been what made Clowney such a valuable player. He has bounced around the league and suffered numerous injuries, but when healthy, he is capable of producing on all three downs at a high level.
This is why it makes sense for Clowney to land back with the Seahawks on a one-year deal. The team would have an aging edge rush group, of course, but they have that even without signing Clowney. Fowler, DeMarcus Lawrence, and Uchenna Nwosu will all be 30 years old or older by the time the coming season is done.
Jadeveon Clowney can help Seattle maintain an elite defense in 2026, at least. That is why the gamble of signing him makes sense.
What wouldn't be fun is watching the Patriots make a move for him, and then the Seattle Seahawks have to play him in the first week of the season. That game already has enough drama. New England traded for AJ Brown this past offseason, and fans know all too well about the issues between head coach Mike Vrabel and reporter Dianna Russini.
What 12s likely don't want amid all the Vrabel drama is for the Patriots to have two bits of positivity. Brown is the kind of receiver quarterback Drake Maye needed, but Clowney would make their defense better. That might not have any bearing on the rest of the season, unless Seattle and New England play in the Super Bowl again, but it would make Week 1 more difficult for the Seahawks.
