Fox Sports' Jordan Schultz reports that the Seattle Seahawks are set to meet with cornerback Shaquill Griffin on Monday. Of course, the 12s are likely very familiar with Griffin.

He was a former third-round pick by the Seahawks in 2017 and played four seasons for the Seahawks. From 2017 to 2020, Griffin served as a starting cornerback on the Seattle defense and was widely considered a great starter. Griffin, 29, is coming off a strong season with the Minnesota Vikings, in which he tallied two interceptions, six PBUs, and 41 total tackles.

The mutual interest makes sense for both sides, as the Seahawks lost cornerback Tre Brown in free agency to the San Francisco 49ers and are quickly becoming thin at the position. Griffin, who remains unsigned, would welcome a return to Seattle after finding himself on four teams over the past four seasons.

Seahawks might be close to bringing back cornerback Shaquill Griffin

Drafted out of UCF in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft, the boundary cornerback quickly made an impact in Seattle. In his rookie season, Griffin played 15 games and recorded 15 PBU's, leading the team. Griffin followed up his rookie season with three more impressive seasons, including his 2019 campaign in which Griffin notched a 77.0 Pro Football Focus (subscription required) rating, which was suitable for the 15th-best cornerback grade in the league.

However, following an injury-riddled 2020 season, in which cornerbacks like DJ Reed and Tre Flowers saw most of the snaps, coupled with Sidney Jones's signing, Seattle let Griffin's rookie contract expire and allowed him to walk in free agency. The Jacksonville Jaguars signed Griffin to a 3-year, $40 million contract that offseason. However, in 2023, Jacksonville released Griffin with a year remaining on his deal.

Since 2023, Griffin has played for the Houston Texans, Carolina Panthers, and, most recently, the Minnesota Vikings, who signed him to a 1-year, $4 million deal in 2024. If that contract indicates what Seattle would likely be obliged to pay, it would be rational to expect Seattle to offer a one-year deal worth upwards of $4 million, laced with incentives.

Seattle has plenty of cap space, and they should make the deal happen.

The Seahawks suddenly need some cornerback depth when you look at the roster. Seattle's best boundary cornerback, Riq Woolen, dealt with nagging injuries last season, forcing guys like Josh Jobe and Nehemiah Pritchett to play significant snaps. Neither of those two is terrible, but an upgrade at the position's depth would be a welcome addition to the roster.
