The Seattle Seahawks were their own worst enemy on Sunday. They made two many unforced mistakes in a tough loss to the San Francisco 49ers that will sting for longer than most fans would want to admit.
While it's nice to see that this team almost won even when they didn't play their best game, this isn't the time for morale victories. The Seahawks should've been 5-0 by now, and they've gotten in their own way too many times.
It might feel nitpicky, and it's way too early in the season. However, some players aren't playing up to their standards, and that was especially true in this one. Considering that, let's talk about the four players who didn't do the feam any favors in Week 5.
4 Seattle Seahawks players who didn't help the team in loss to 49ers
Sam Darnold
Sam Darnold did more than enough to redeem himself last season, and most people would agree that they should've given him a new contract right away. However, he's been worryingly closer to that 'bad' Sam Darnold than to the one we saw last season.
Once again, Darnold took sacks he could've avoided by trying to extend a play, put the ball in harm's way multiple times, turned the ball over, and lacked the touch to make plays down the stretch. He completed just 18 passes for 195 yards, one score, and two picks.
George Holani
George Holani was a major liability in this one. He failed to make the most of Zach Charbonnet's and Jadarian Price's absence, and one of his two fumbles — the one the Seahawks couldn't recover — may have sealed the game.
Not taking a knee and closing out the half was a terrible decision by Mike Macdonald, but Holani's execution was even worse. He finished the game with four carries for seven yards and four receptions for 24 yards.
Josh Jobe
Josh Jobe hasn't been the same lockdown cornerback since he got that big payday this offseason. The fact that the Seahawks remain unsettled at the position may show that they're not as high on him as they seemed.
Notably, it would be extremely hard to blame them for reconsidering their options after this one. Jobe was on the wrong end of most big plays, giving up a team-worst six catches on nine targets for 98 yards and a touchdown.
Jaxon Smith-Njigba
Jaxon Smith-Njigba is the best wide receiver in the league and has been the best player on the field more often than not, but even the best of the best make mistakes. JSN could've given the Seahawks a chance to tie the game, but he had a rare drop with no timeouts left.
Of course, it's hard to blame a guy who had five receptions for 102 yards, a beautiful catch-and-run for a touchdown that made multiple guys miss, and a 16-yard carry. But hey, everyone has to make the list once, am I right?
