The Seattle Seahawks are far more than 53 guys on the roster, just like every other organization. Teams use their practice squad to give more depth to positions of need. If a defensive lineman gets injured, for instance, the team might already have a player ready to take their place on the practice squad.
The squad is also good for developing players, even if they have little chance of ever being elevated to the active roster on game days. A late-round draft selection that didn't make the team initially might be re-signed to the squad to better learn the Seahawks' way of doing business.
Teams can have as many as 16 players on the squad, and 17 if the team has an international player they keep. Most of the time, it is the former number, and many times the 16 is filled in with players the team had during training camp and the preseason.
Practice squad players can be elevated as many as three times during the season before they have to either be added to the active roster or released. Often, a player passes three elevations, and is then released, only to be re-signed to the practice squad.

The first player to have been reported to be signed to the Seattle Seahawks' extra 16 was, unsurprisingly, Trevon Diggs. Diggs was signed about a week before the final preseason game. He played limited reps against the Kansas City Chiefs, but he did have an interception.
He looked good enough to potentially earn the CB3 spot, just behind starters Devon Witherspoon and Josh Jobe, but instead, he was somewhat of a surprising release when roster cuts were made. General manager John Schneider made it clear that the team intended to sign the cornerback to the practice squad to give him more time to acclimate, and that is what has happened.
Seahawks fans should expect Diggs to be elevated early and often, potentially even in Week 1, and become a member of the active roster soon. The hope is he stays healthy, and if that happens, he should be a quality player.
Like most years, the Seahawks are bringing back several players they either drafted or signed as undrafted free agents. Fuller, Dansby, and Henderson are among that group and won't be the last. Ricky White III was a 2025 draft pick for Seattle.
