Until the 2026 NFL season gets underway and the next Super Bowl champions are crowned, the Seattle Seahawks remain the gold standard in professional football. Yes, they've bled some talent and great coaching, but by all accounts, Seattle will be right in the thick of things again this fall and winter.
But the rest of the league, and the NFC West in particular, aren't just going to bow down to the Seahawks. The Los Angeles Rams, in particular, lit off some fireworks to begin the month with their blockbuster acquisition of all-world defensive end Myles Garrett.
Now, the 12s aren't too worried about the Rams as a result of this, at least not more than usual. And overreaching to counter such a big trade would not be a wise endeavor. That said, a recent report from Seattle's post-Super Bowl locker room may make the Garrett trade a bit tougher to stomach.
Seattle Seahawks knew NFC Championship was real Super Bowl last season
The Athletic's Ted Nguyen spoke on the Just Win Podcast about the Garrett trade and how it may affect Las Vegas Raiders star Maxx Crosby. But amid that conversation, Nguyen snuck in an interesting tidbit about what was said behind closed doors after the Seahawks hoisted the Lombardi.
“I was in that Seattle locker room after they won the Super Bowl, and a lot of their players were like, 'The last week was our real -- that was the real Super Bowl. The NFC Championship was the real Super Bowl.' That's how they felt about the Rams.”
If that is the truth of the matter for Mike Macdonald's squad, then surely the addition of Garrett is a bit more worrisome than originally thought. Of course, it's Myles Garrett, so the Seahawks were already on red alert. But this just makes the margins even thinner for two of the league's best.
Now, Nguyen isn't necessarily telling Seahawks fans anything that they didn't know. They saw Seattle dig much deeper against their NFC West counterpart than they did against the New England Patriots under the game's most sophisticated microscope.
Obviously, the hope is that adding Garrett isn't enough to get the Rams over the hump, and they've wagered a ton on their future while failing to reach the NFL mountaintop again. And losing Jared Verse may be a bit tougher a pill to swallow than LA fans realize, even if Garrett is a major upgrade.
Time will tell if Les Snead and Sean McVay can give Seahawks fans a bit of deja vu by going all-in during the 2026 season. Trading for Garrett certainly seems like a good way to increase your Super Bowl odds and gain an advantage in the division, conference and league.
The fact that the Rams were held in such high regard by the Seahawks last year and were their toughest opponent only reinforces how scary LA can be this year.
