One might rightly wonder if San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk even wants to keep playing football. Arguably the most physically gifted of the Seattle Seahawks' NFC West rival, Aiyuk has been nothing but a headache for San Fran for two years.
He had a mini-holdout during 2024, got a huge new contract once that was done, and then didn't play at all in 2025, seemingly while still rehabbing from tearing his ACL and MCL in 2024. That seems quite a long time to wait to return, though.
But this week, Aiyuk added fuel to the fire of 49ers fans angry with him as he took to social media and said some pretty inflammatory things about the team that currently employs him. In fact, he called the 49ers "stupid" and "dumb," which the organization might be due to paying Aiyuk for four years and as much as $120 million while not knowing if the receiver was fully committed to the team.
Brandon Aiyuk can't keep Seattle Seahawks fans from laughing at the San Francisco 49ers' dilemma
Aiyuk said on Instagram, "You wanna know why they really mad though? They mad 'cause they stupid. They dumb. They mad that they paid me $50 million in eight months and then voided my guarantees for 2027. And I'm about to be on a new team in 2027. They mad at theyselves for real. (The 49ers are) acting like they mad at me, but they stupid a** mad at theyself."
Not to go out of the way to defend one of the Seahawks' main challengers for the NFC West crown every season, but if the 49ers front office and coaching staff are angry at Brandon Aiyuk, it could be that even after they gave him all that money, he decided not to show up even for team meetings. "Team-first" likely isn't in the wide receiver's vocabulary.
As wretched as the Aiyuk situation must be for 49ers fans, it definitely makes for great theater for Seattle Seahawks fans. The hope is partly that Aiyuk gets back to playing football and being in the San Francisco locker room because his presence would appear to likely disrupt team chemistry.
The NFC West is, obviously, no joke. Sure, the Arizona Cardinals are a bit funny because they are the only team in the division that keeps doing all the wrong things. But the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams are extremely difficult opponents.
Anything that might make them a tad bit worse is certainly welcome by 12s. The Rams don't have any obvious negative situations (Puka Nacua is who he is, and the team wins because of his play on the field), but the 49ers might if Aiyuk chooses to return. More likely, he will never play another down for San Francisco, but the fun would happen if he did.
