Seahawks icon Russell Wilson still doesn’t have a team and time is ticking

Round and round he goes...

The Seattle Seahawks no longer have to worry about Russell Wilson being their quarterback, but 12s will likely never forget the quarterback. He was far too successful in a run that would make him the most productive QB in franchise history. But in the 2026 offseason, he is still a free agent.

Wilson left Seattle after the 2021 season, which seems like decades ago and yesterday all at one. After that season, the quarterback went to ownership and reportedly asked for general manager John Schneider and head coach Pete Carroll to be fired.

Since then, Wilson has played for three teams. Carroll has coached two different ones and been fired by both. John Schneider, though, has another Super Bowl ring to go along with his from the 2013 season. Schneider has been the ultimate winner and doesn't have to worry about his job security for quite some time, if ever again.

Former Seattle Seahawks great Russell Wilson might have played his last down in the NFL

The narrative of Russell Wilson hasn't been a happy one in the last four years. He bounced out of the playing for the Denver Broncos after two seasons, and was such a disappointment that Denver was willing to have nearly $100 million in dead cap to get rid of the quarterback.

He then found his way to the Pittsburgh Steelers and was playing well until he and his team lost their final six games of the 2024 season. This past season, Wilson was benched after three games with a bad New York Giants team. He was eventually demoted to QB3.

What are his hopes for finding a new team? Iffy. His chances of being a long-term starter in the NFL again? Nonexistent.

One might wonder if that is what Russell Wilson is asking for, though. If he and his agent went to teams and offered his services as a backup, that might be acceptable. So far, no team has been a taker for the quarterback.

Maybe Wilson should simply retire and become a talking head on a pre-game show for one of the many broadcasters of NFL games. He'd be good at it, to be fair. He has offered robotic answers to questions for a decade and a half, but when not talking about himself, he comes across more naturally.

Russell Wilson isn't a bad person, though he has made it difficult for Seattle Seahawks fans to root for him since 2021. That might no longer be an issue as he might be facing forced retirement. He's made enough money, however, to live comfortably for the rest of his life. That era might start sooner rather than later for the quarterback.
