Seahawks just got their first taste of the full Trevon Diggs experience

The Seattle Seahawks took a risk by signing cornerback Trevon Diggs. The former First-Team All-Pro had been ravaged by knee injuries in the past several years and was seemingly a shell of his former self. But Seattle might need him to be great, as the depth at corner is shallow.

In his first action in a Seattle jersey against a different team, Diggs delivered a glimpse of how bad and good he can be against the Kansas City Chiefs in preseason Week 3. Had his performance been in a regular season game, 12s would have groaned and then loudly applauded.

On the first drive of the game for KC, quarterback Garrett Nussmeier tossed a pass to veteran tight end Travis Kelce, and Kelce, even though he is 36 years old, was able to make one cut and leave Diggs on the turf. For the cornerback to earn valuable reps in head coach Mike Macdonald's defense, he has to be a better tackler than he showed on that play.

On the Chiefs' second drive, though, Diggs read a pass from Nussmeier extremely well and was able to get an interception. Sure, the play happened against the Kansas City backup quarterback (really, the backup of the backup who might not even make the active roster), but Diggs has had a lot of picks in his career, and he proved why he has a nose for the ball on the play.

Things could have been much worse for Diggs, of course. He could have done nothing and been a potential cut candidate. The Seahawks haven't invested much in him, as he is only signed for one year and just a bit over a million dollars. Should he be released, the team loses very little financially.

However, if Trevon Diggs can show he can be anywhere close to his 2021 level, when he had 11 interceptions, he will make the team and be CB3. If Devon Witherspoon lines up in the slot, for instance, Josh Jobe could be one outside corner while Diggs is on the other side.

He is a tall corner, and the Seattle Seahawks need that. But if he has suffered too many injuries to be near his best form or he continues to whiff on tackle attempts as he did against Travis Kelce, Diggs won't play much. The drawback is he only had one preseason game to flash how good or bad he can be, and Seattle got a bit of both against the Chiefs.
