Seattle Seahawks’ Trevon Diggs interest suddenly reeks of desperation

Maybe the Seattle Seahawks were counting on Terrion Arnold playing more than it first appeared they needed. How else to explain the team's interest in cornerback Trevon Diggs, a player whose best days seem far behind him? Moreover, that the team is looking at Arnold and Diggs at all exposes what must be a glaring problem.

Adding to that is that maybe the Seahawks are beginning to regret letting Riq Woolen leave in free agency and sign with the Philadelphia Eagles. Woolen was a mercurial player, but at his best, he was elite. Those CBs currently on the Seattle roster aren't capable of the same level.

As for Diggs, he reportedly had a tryout with the team on Tuesday. Injuries have apparently robbed the corner of his best form. He is still only 27 years old, but he has played more than 11 games in a season since 2022, once played only two games, and last year played nine.

Seattle Seahawks clearly think they have a cornerback problem

In 2021, in Diggs' second season in the league, he was named First-Team All-Pro after leading the league with 11 interceptions, two of which he returned for touchdowns. He made the Pro Bowl the following season, too, but that was the last bit of his potential greatness.

Last year, his quarterback rating allowed was an atrocious 154.2, and he allowed four touchdown passes in his nine games. His original team, the Dallas Cowboys, gave up on him, and the Green Bay Packers picked him up and had him play in one game.

Of course, the Seattle Seahawks simply visiting with Trevon Diggs doesn't mean he will be signed, and even if that happens, no guarantee exists that Diggs will make the 53-man roster when final roster cuts are made on August 30. The team might be kicking the proverbial tires on Diggs to see how much he has left to give.

Still, Seattle chasing Terrion Arnold, who hasn't officially signed because he is on the NFL's exempt list while facing eight felony charges, four for kidnapping and four for armed robbery, seems like a risk in itself, but implies the team is happy with its current group of cornerbacks.

Visiting with Diggs further indicates that. The positive is that head coach Mike Macdonald has several players who can play cornerback in real games, so the depth of the group could be the only issue.

Meanwhile, Josh Jobe, Devon Witherspoon, and nickelback/safety Nick Emmanwori, if healthy, should be a great trio. If something happens to one of them, Seattle could be in trouble, even if it signs Trevon Diggs and Terrion Arnold is able to play.
