Seahawks missing global spotlight could be bigger deal than it seems

Taking their talents across borders? Probably not this year.

Local Seattle Seahawks fans already have another reason to look forward to their team's Super Bowl defense season: more home games than away games. The Seahawks have been rewarded nine games at Lumen Field to eight on the road, marking a friendly element to their schedule.

All of Seattle's games are expected to be played on American soil, unlike two of their NFC West division rivals, who are jet-setting to Australia for a September 10th clash in Melbourne; the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams will be bringing some West Coast football to the land of Down Under.

Considering that the 49ers and Rams will both represent the NFC West on the international stage, this likely leaves the Seahawks on the outside looking in when it comes to leaving the country to play.

That said, with the 49ers and Rams development, there's good reason to speculate that the Seahawks might follow them and receive that same opportunity next year, if they don't still get one this year

The Seattle Seahawks still have a chance to play internationally against the San Francisco 49ers

The NFL is doing everything it can to reach its fans worldwide, and the slate of games scheduled for the 2026-27 season continues that effort. So far, only two international matchups have been confirmed, with both opponents set. Conversely, games in Munich (Germany), Madrid (Spain), London (England), Mexico City (Mexico), and Paris (France) have yet to secure a second opponent.

The Seahawks are nowhere to be found on the list of teams scheduled to play in those games, which means, given the list of teams they are scheduled to play this season, only the Washington Commanders and the 49ers could be their international opponents.

That said, with the 49ers already leaving the country twice, once against the Rams, the NFL will unlikely add another NFC West team to the international ballad, unless it's a Seahawks-Commanders matchup.

It's not looking good in favor of the Seahawks playing on the international stage, even while the door to face the Commanders is open. If that doesn't materialize, the NFL should strongly consider the Seahawks going overseas (or across the Mexican border) to represent the league next year. It would make sense, given that Seattle is one of, if not the best, team in the NFL.

Seattle has played internationally three times before, going 2-1. They last played the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Munich in 2022. It would be nice to see the champions play in front of another crowd. If this season isn't the time, hopefully that time comes around later.
