Seahawks officially make offensive coordinator move that oddly felt inevitable

Bur of course...

The Seattle Seahawks didn't keep the new offensive coordinator hire in-house after all. The team lined up four assistant coach interviews on Thursday and Friday, and Seattle chose none of them. Instead, they stole a coach from an NFC West rival.

This actually shouldn't be overly surprising. While keeping consistency is good, if there is potentially a better candidate elsewhere, why not grab them? It is definitely true that the coach will have some knowledge of a rival's system. Brian Fleury is the new OC of your Seahawks, and he was most recently the run game coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers.

Fleury's hire means several things. For one, it means that while head coach Mike Macdonald has been dominating Kyle Shanahan and San Fran recently, Macdonald didn't think the 49ers had a bad offensive scheme. He just thought his defense was better.

The other aspect is that the new hire doesn't mean Seattle is going to suddenly be a pass-happy team. If anything, the Seahawks will continue to be at least half-run. The 49ers run the ball well, and Fleury will know how to translate that to Seattle. It's a great move.

Fleury is 47 years old and has coached in the NFL since 2013. He was San Francisco's tight end coach from 2022 through 2024 and then was run game coordinator and tight ends coach in 2025. A tight ends coach works closely with the offensive line coach, since the TEs play a big part in the unit, so one might wonder if Fleury will make any changes to the Seahawks coaching staff.

Hopefully, he doesn't have to. John Benton was fantastic as the O-line coach in 2025, and the hope is he stays, even though he worked with outgoing offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak with both the New Orleans Saints and Seattle.

One coach who will be following Kubiak to the Las Vegas Raiders is Andrew Janocko. He also worked with Kubiak previously, during their stops with the Seattle Seahawks, and Janocko will be the new offensive coordinator with the Raiders. He won't be calling the plays, however. Kubiak will do that.

Meanwhile, for what's important for Seahawks fans, Brian Fleury will be calling plays for the first time in his NFL career. If he is anything like Kyle Shanahan, Seattle has a winner. Based on the brilliant moves of the last year by Macdonald and general manager John Schneider, no one should doubt Fleury will be a brilliant addition as well.
