The Seattle Seahawks should be good again in 2026, assuming too many injuries do not occur, but every good NFL team doesn't just look a season ahead. General manager John Schneider is almost certainly thinking several years ahead, especially in terms of contracts.

Schneider could have a future concern about the team's edge rush group. High-end talent currently exists, but DeMarcus Lawrence, Dante Fowler, and Uchenna Nwosu will all be past 30 years old in 2027. An aggressive pursuit of younger talent to pair with Derick Hall will be needed, and that theoretically could include New York Giants linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux.

Hall signed an extension this offseason, and he won't be leaving Seattle anytime soon, if ever. He is a good pass rusher, but fantastic against the run. Her versatility is what Seattle's defense relies on to be elite. That's why Hall has been and will continue to be so valuable.

Seattle Seahawks should kick the tires on a potential trade for the New York Giants' Kayvon Thibodeaux

New York could be open to trading Thibodeaux, a 2022 first-round pick. He is entering the final year of his rookie deal and hasn't yet signed an extension. The Giants could also be worried a bit about Thibodeaux's recent raw production. He had just 2.5 sacks in 2025 and missed seven games.

In the last two seasons combined, the edge rusher has missed 12 games, a trend that needs to be corrected in 2026 or his asking price in free agency next offseason may be somewhat diminished. Still, Thibodeaux's raw production is somewhat misleading.

He is a well-rounded linebacker who can play elite run defense. While he needs to fix his tackling issues (according to Pro Football Reference, the player whiffed on 19.4 percent of his tackle attempts last season), he wasn't awful in that aspect in previous seasons. The 6'5" and 260-pound edge rusher would also be a great fit in Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald's system.

Macdonald needs his edge players to be three-down guys. The number of sacks one racks up doesn't necessarily matter. Boye Mafe, for instance, had just two last season, and yet he was rewarded with a $60 million contract over three years this offseason in free agency by the Cincinnati Bengals.

Derick Hall also had just two sacks, after having eight in 2024, but the Seahawks know his true value is in his ability to make plays while also allowing his teammates the freedom to get involved, too. Mike Macdonald's system doesn't work because of the individuals involved, mind you, but the individuals involved succeed because of the scheme.

What matters in the Seattle Seahawks' scheme is an edge rusher's ability to play at a high level in all areas of the game, and Kayvon Thibodeaux has proven he can do that. He simply needs to stay healthier.

The biggest question is what the Seahawks might need to offer the New York Giants to try to acquire Thibodeaux. Seattle currently is projected to have 12 picks in 2027, due to comp picks for free agents lost and the Minnesota Vikings hiring Nolan Teasley to be their new general manager, so John Schneider has the draft depth to make a move for the Giants edge rusher should he choose to do so.
