NFL pundits are going to hate what the Seattle Seahawks have done to their wide receiver room this offseason. While Jaxon Smith-Njigba remains (and thank goodness for that), veteran DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett were shipped off this offseason. Seattle picked up free agents Cooper Kupp and Marquez Valdes-Scantling instead.
Kupp could be great if he can stay healthy. MVS is a good person, but a mercurial receiver. He will break off an 80-yard touchdown reception, and then drop two passes.
The Seahawks need productive depth. Rookie Tory Horton might be a good draft pick, but first-year receivers have a terrible time being productive in the NFL. Jake Bobo has been solid for two years, but he has a ceiling. One veteran who put some time in with Seattle last year could have a breakout 2025, though.
Cody White might be one the Seahawks' unsung heroes in 2025
Cody White hasn't gotten many chances to catch passes in the league. He began his career as an undrafted free agent in 2020 with the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs then released him in July 2020, and he was picked up by the New York Giants in August and let go a week later. The Denver Broncos then signed him but released him before final roster cuts.
In September, the Steelers signed him, but he remained on the practice squad for the entire season. In 2021, he played in 15 games for the Steelers, but throughout the next two seasons, he had only six targets as a receiver. In 2022, he showed up in only one game, and in 2023, he didn't play at all.
The Seahawks picked him up in October of 2023, but only for the practice squad. White was given a chance to play in 2024, and he did well in extremely limited reps. He showed up in three games, had three targets as a receiver, but caught two of them, one of them for 28 yards.
On special teams, he had a blocked punt. When he wasn't catching passes on offense, he proved he could block well.
White also has good size at 6'3" and 215 pounds. He is not going to be a top target for the Seahawks, but he has shown in OTAs and minicamp that he can catch contested passes in the red zone. He and Jake Bobo might have to battle for a roster spot as both do the same kinds of things, but White has more speed.
There is also a decent chance that Bobo and White each stick on the final 53-man roster. If that happens, Seahawks fans should expect White to have an impact on special teams, but pull off a play or three offensively that no one saw coming.
