Trevon Diggs has been released by the Seattle Seahawks. No worries, though. He will likely return to the practice squad, and the team had to make room for right guard Anthony Bradford. The issue is that the Seattle cornerback group has not been great overall, and some fans hoped that Diggs might have helped with that.
Heck, even Diggs hoped he would help with that. He is a tall cornerback, and when healthy and at his best, he can provide good coverage. The truth is that maybe all his knee injuries have taken such a toll that he will never be good again.
Diggs could return, but an elite player doesn't normally get yo-yo'd between the practice squad and the active roster. If Diggs were truly going to have an impact, he likely already would have. He hasn't.
Trevon Diggs released by the Seattle Seahawks, but...
But Diggs' release wasn't the only confusing part of Friday for the Seahawks. Running back Zach Charbonnet has been ruled out for Week 7 against the Kansas City Chiefs, even though many expected him to be a big part of the game plan. The issue was that Seattle didn't see things the same way.
Even with a struggling rushing attack in what might be a must-win game in Week 7, since the team is 3-3, Charbonnet isn't active. He was a full participant in practice throughout the week, but you know how much that mattered? Zero.
Defensive back/edge rusher/whatever-else-is-needed Nick Emmanwori was listed as questionable for a game where the team has to find a way to shut down former Seattle Seahawks running back Kenneth Walker. Walker has played like an All-Pro for the Chiefs since signing with them in free agency this past offseason.
Seattle's defense overall would be gravely negatively affected by not having the versatile Emmanwori. The frustrating part is that Mike Macdonald wouldn't say when the DB's "hip" injury happened. Maybe it was during practice, and maybe it wasn't. Maybe Emmanwori will play, but the concern about him doing so is real.
Trevon Diggs' concern about the future of his career is real. He signed with the Seattle Seahawks before the season in hopes of helping an iffy cornerback group. So far, he has had zero real impact in real games. That isn't going to start in Week 7. Instead, 12s have to hope that the struggling Josh Jobe plays better than he has in most games this season.
