Initial Reaction – Day 3
Now that the draft is over, there are two positives that come to mind. One, Ryan Mallett is NOT a Seahawk. Two, there isn’t a Day 4.
The Seahawks Blew It – Again
Let me begin this post by making it clear that I am not condemning or criticizing either James Carpenter or John Moffitt. I hope they both become great players for the Seahawks. However, I will condemn and criticize the process by which they became Seahawks. The front office failed to trade down when it was prudent to do so on Day 1, and they failed to trade up when they needed to on Day 2. By trading down eighteen spots and out of the second round, Seattle basically gained an extra fourth round pick. They now have two of the [...]
Initial Reaction – Day 2
If you didn’t like my earlier post today, then don’t bother reading the one that will be up tomorrow morning. I’m really angry, so that’s all I want to say about it for now.
The Seahawks Blew It
After sleeping on it and taking some time to calmly assess what happened, I could only come to one conclusion – the Seahawks, or more specifically GM John Schneider, blew it when Seattle selected Alabama OT James Carpenter at #25. That conclusion has very little to do with Carpenter himself. I know very little about him. He’ll be counted on to start immediately somewhere along the line, probably on the right side. If he becomes a solid player, it still doesn’t take away from the fact that the front office bungled this situation. It’s no secret the Seahawks were trying [...]
Initial Reaction
Wow. It never occured to me that the Seahawks would reach for a player, especially with so many QB’s taken early. I was expecting either Da’Quan Bowers, Muhammad Wilkerson or Gabe Carimi, probably in that order. Andy Dalton wouldn’t have shocked me, either. The Seahawks probably would have taken Danny Watkins if he were still available. Possibly Cameron Jordan as well. Bowers’ knee damage must be quite extensive for him to fall this far. Hopefully, James Carpenter will prove to be a solid player. He’ll have to be. He’ll be a starter, but where? LG, RG, RT? Sean Locklear was [...]
Hmmm . . .
The draft is shaping up well for the Seahawks. The chances of an offensive lineman being selected have increased, as well as the possibility that they might select Andy Dalton. Could Da’Quan Bowers be in the mix? He’s falling because of health concerns. Did the Seahawks even work him out or give him a physical?
I don’t pretend to know who the best player the Seahawks should select is. As far as prospects go, I’ve seen a few of them on TV and read their combine numbers, but who really knows who is going to be a keeper and who is going to be a bust? It was just two years ago that all the “experts” said that Aaron Curry was the safest pick in the draft. Look how that turned out. Having seen numerous games in person (including 10 last season), I think I have a pretty good handle on what the Seahawks need. [...]
A Look at the Draft – QB
Whether or not Matt Hasselbeck is re-signed, the Seahawks have to start planning for the future of the team at quarterback. Charlie Whitehurst is only signed through next season. Even if Whitehurst were to sign an extension, there is still a gaping need for a young QB that Seattle must address through the draft either this year or next. With so many needs to address as well as the urgency to draft players who will play right away, is it wise for the team to draft a quarterback in the first or second round? My vote would be no to [...]
A Look at the Draft – LB
The Seahawks have needs at virtually every position. The team needs to select players, especially in the early rounds, that can contribute immediately. During the middle rounds, Seattle needs to select prospects they feel can eventually become starters. In the later rounds, they need to address depth and perhaps take chances on players they feel might be overlooked and underrated who fit into their defensive scheme. That is why the position least likely to be impacted in this week’s draft is linebacker. It’s not because Seattle is stacked at the position. In fact, the opposite is probably true. Only David [...]
A Look at the Draft – RB
At first glance, the Seahawks’ depth chart at running back looks pretty good. Marshawn Lynch, Justin Forsett and Leon Washington will split time at tailback with Michael Robinson at fullback. However, don’t be surprised if the Seahawks use a pick or two in the upcoming draft to add talent and depth to this lineup. Robinson missed several games due to injury last season, and the team felt his absence. A late round pick to add another fullback is not out of the question. The team has had a poor history of drafting fullbacks during the last few years, so signing [...]
