With yesterdays blockbuster trade, the offensive line now becomes the Seattle Seahawks’ biggest area of need heading into free agency.

Losing two-time Pro Bowl center Max Unger to the New Orleans Saints in the trade that brought tight end Jimmy Graham to the Seahawks was a big blow to the Seahawks offensive line. Despite playing in only six regular season games last season, Unger provided such a boost to the Hawks run game that Marshawn Lynch and the other running backs averaged a whole yard more per carry with him in the game.

The loss of James Carpenter to the New York Jets in free agency was more of a blow to the depth of the unit, considering he was an average player in his time with Seattle.

With the two losses, addressing the offensive line becomes the teams biggest priority at the moment and it looks like general manager John Schneider is going to be focusing on that need through free agency.

On Tuesday, the first day of the new league year, the Miami Dolphins released guard Shelley Smith. Just a day later and Smith is in Seattle visiting with the defending NFC Champion Seattle Seahawks.

Smith appeared in eleven games with Miami and started three, playing both left and right guard.

It was just last offseason that Shelley Smith signed a two-year deal with the Dolphins for $5.5 million. If the Seahawks do sign the offensive lineman, he will likely compete at left guard with Alvin Bailey.
