Doug Baldwin – Secret Superstar of the Seattle Seahawks?

The guys over at Pro Football Focus have an always-interesting column where they point out a “secret superstar” for each team. Today they released the Seattle Seahawks edition for this year, and their choice was wide receiver Doug Baldwin.

What they say is the same thing you’ll find echo’d on here from the past few seasons. While Baldwin still carries that “undrafted free agent” label, he has clearly been the team’s No. 1 receiver.

They also point out Baldwin’s versatility. While he plays well on the outside, he is most deadly when used in the slot. They point out that “he was sixth in the league in YPRR from the slot, this time at 1.67, an area he has continued to excel in throughout his career.”

So even while the Seahawks continue to draft and stock up on players at the position, Baldwin remains a significant piece of the puzzle.

What will be interesting will be to see what happens to Baldwin’s stats and his role with the team going forward. Jimmy Graham is going to major piece of the passing game. The also has guys like Chris Matthews, Kevin Norwood, and Kasen Williams who will take up snaps on the outside, as well as Tyler Lockett who will take up snaps in the slot.

"What we’ve seen out of Baldwin in his first four seasons in the league, is that he doesn’t have to be the team’s No. 1 receiver to be effective. He can be second fiddle to Graham and is the type of player that both Richardson and Lockett should be looking to learn from early in their young careers."

Baldwin was an interesting choice to be featured this year, but I doubt he the only option. At some point, K.J Wright is going to start getting recognition in these types of features. If there’s a secret superstar on the defensive side of the ball for Seattle, it would be him.
