Seattle Seahawks Spotlight: The Quarterback Conundrum

Like with most passionate debates, I believe the truth lies in middle. Matt’s critics don’t seem to remember 2006, when Holmgren abandoned the running game and told the entire league that Hasselbeck was going to throw the ball 50 times a game, and Matt still lead the team to the 2nd round of the playoffs. Matt’s proponents tend to ignore the head scratching interceptions that he has been prone to making in the first quarter of almost every game he’s played in over the last 2 years.

In the end though, I don’t believe it really matters all that much. While this is a quarterback’s league, and an argument could be made that that the NFL quarterback is the most important position in all of sports, we all need to be reminded that this is perhaps that most “team” game ever invented.

The Carolina Panthers had a long run of success with a very average Jake Delhomme at quarterback. Even Trent Dilfer (remember him?) won a Superbowl with the Ravens. Look at all the success that the Stealers have had with a very overrated Ben Roethlisberger.

Having an elite quarterback is no guarantee for success either. Dan Marino never won a Superbowl. John Elway didn’t win one until he was older and his skills had declined to the point he was just an average player. Even Peyton Manning, probably his generation’s greatest quarterback, had to wait 10 seasons before getting a Superbowl title.

Perhaps we should all sit back, enjoy the fact that football is back, and wait to see how this season unfolds. No matter what happens, I guarantee you that it will at least be interesting.
