Consensus Power Rankings – Seahawks hold strong

facebooktwitterreddit

NFL Power Rankings have definitely become a thing. All season I’ve been providing a weekly update of the top national lists and showing where the Seattle Seahawks stand in each one. But I want something better. Something that helps mitigate some of the extremes you see from one poll to the next, and something that provides a balanced look at the overall national viewpoint on where the Seahawks stand relative to the rest of the league.

Enter….. the Consensus NFL Power Rankings!

Thanks to all the polls out there (with a huge helping hand from Microsoft Excel) there is enough information to compile a comprehensive look at the overall rankings. Most of these polls are subjective, driven by sheer opinion, while a few are created using statistical metrics (such as strength of schedule, offensive and defensive ratings etc.).

More from Seattle Seahawks News

Overall I will use 9 different rankings, from the following sources (the first three rankings are statistics based, objective, numbers plugged into a spreadsheet and spit out for our enjoyment. The rest are opinion polls)

  1. 12thmanrising.com: Keith Myers*
  2. ESPN Power Poll: John Clayton*
  3. Pro Football Focus: Nathan Jahnke*
  4. Fox Sports: Dan Schneier
  5. CBS Sports: Pete Prisco
  6. Sports Illustrated: Chris Burke
  7. NFL.com: Elliott Harrison
  8. USA Today: Staff
  9. Yahoo Sports: Frank Schwab

This time of year the sample size is so large there aren’t going to be the types of big swings that you see earlier in the year. The Seahawks continued their steady rise in the rankings after their 35-7 beatdown of the Vikings, while their division mates in Arizona are now sitting solidly at #2.

Here are this week’s complete consensus rankings:

  1. Carolina Panthers
  2. Arizona Cardinals
  3. Cincinnati Bengals
  4. New England Patriots
  5. Denver Broncos
  6. Seattle Seahawks
  7. Pittsburgh Steelers
  8. Kansas City Chiefs
  9. Green Bay Packers
  10. Minnesota Vikings
  11. Buffalo Bills
  12. NY Jets
  13. Houston Texans
  14. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  15. Indianapolis Colts
  16. Washington Redskins
  17. Oakland Raiders
  18. Atlanta Falcons
  19. Chicago Bears
  20. NY Giants
  21. Philadelphia Eagles
  22. Miami Dolphins
  23. Dallas Cowboys
  24. Detroit Lions
  25. New Orleans Saints
  26. Tennessee Titans
  27. San Francisco 49ers
  28. St. Louis Rams
  29. Baltimore Ravens
  30. Jacksonville Jaguars
  31. San Diego Chargers
  32. Cleveland Browns

Next: Wilson still underrated?

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING ABOUT THE SEAHAWKS:

“Can you guess who’s leading the league in receiving yards over the past four weeks? Nope, not Odell Beckham Jr. or A.J. Green. Allen Robinson,Larry Fitzgerald and Antonio Brown are up there, but not any of them either. The answer: Doug Baldwin, with 433 yards and six touchdowns from Weeks 10 to 13.” — Chris Burke, SI

“With consecutive wins over the Steelers and Vikings, the Seahawks are rounding into form right around the time they have in the last two years.”Dan Schneier, FOX Sports

“Tell me, who wants to play these guys in January?” — Elliot Harrison, NFL.com

“They’re getting better because Russell Wilson is better. He’s been on fire.” — Pete Prisco, CBS Sports

You know things are going well for the Seahawks when even Prisco says something nice about Wilson.
