10 free agents that make sense for the Seahawks

Evan Mathis, G, Denver Broncos

Mathis had a long visit in Seattle last year prior to signing with the Broncos. Word was there was plenty of mutual interest but the Seahawks simply didn’t have the salary cap space, and Mathis ended up on a one year deal for $3.25 million in Denver. After a slow start, he played exceptionally well the second half of the season. He’s 34 now, but with the Seahawks looking for a significant upgrade on the offensive line this off season, they may be looking to add a veteran presence. Also, his age will impact his price, and may fall right in line with what Seattle is willing to pay this time around.

Mitchell Schwartz, RT, Cleveland Browns

It would cost a bit more, but if the Seahawks want to make a bigger splash on the offensive line, the 26 year old Schwartz could give them big bang for bigger bucks. He’s an outstanding right tackle who will likely be looking to get out of Cleveland. If Seattle allows Russell Okung to walk away, moving Garry Gilliam to left tackle and signing Schwartz could set them up with good, young, bookend tackles for years to come.

Stefen Wisniewski, C, Jacksonville Jaguars

Think we’re focusing too much on offensive line candidates? Not possible. It’s the one area the Hawks needs to address first and foremost, and it might just be the position that kept them from reaching a third straight Super Bowl. Patrick Lewis was a big upgrade over Drew Nowak last year, and the team just tendered Lewis as a restricted free agent, but he’s serviceable at best. Like Mathis, Wisniewski had a long visit in Seattle last off season and there was an assumption a deal was there to be made. But there were concerns about Wisniewski’s shoulder at the time, and he was also asking for too much money. He ended up signing a one year deal in Jacksonville and started all 16 games. He’s solid, young, and would be plugged right in as the starter.

Why wouldn’t Jacksonville want him back? They just might, and they have more salary cap room than anyone. But there are reports that the Jaguars are thinking bigger, as in Cleveland’s Alex Mack. This may indicate their willingness to let “Wiz” walk away.
