The Seahawks should look to trade for Von Miller to fill their need at DE

My proposed trade

In this scenario Seattle ships out its 2nd round pick in 2020, and its 4th round pick in 2021. This is a very similar trade they made for Duane Brown back in 2017. The reason I use this trade as a basis, both Brown and Miller play premium positions. While both of them are getting older, they are still amongst the best at their respective positions. This trade will leave Denver with a dead cap hit of $11.85 million. Seattle will inherit the rest of his contract and will have a cap hit of $13.775 million on the books for 2020.

My proposed extension:

The final step of this equation would be to work on an extension. It simply wouldn’t make sense to trade 2 high picks for a one-year rental, so an extension would need to be in place for this trade to occur. I propose extending him 2 additional seasons to bring this to a 3-year contract to minimize his cap hit this year.

Terms: 2 years, $34 million

Avg Salary: $17 million

Total GTD: $28 million

Bonus:  $17 million

Cap hits by year:

  • 2020: 9.775 million
  • 2021: 18 million
  • 2022: 20 million

How the extension worked:

  • Von Miller is signed for the 2020 season. The Seahawks inherited $13.775 million of his contract.
  • The extension will keep Miller on the roster through the 2022 season.
  • I am converting $8 million (of the $13.775 million we inherited) of Miller’s base salary for the 2020 season into a signing bonus. This signing bonus would be spread through all 3 years of the deal to minimize his cap hit this season.

How this looks on paper:

Year             Base                         Bonus            Cap hit                Note

2020         $13,775,000                       0             $13,775,000     Original

2020          $5,775,000            $4,000,000      $9,775,000      After Extension

2021         $12,000,000           $6,000,000     $18,000,000    Extension

2022         $13,000,000           $7,000,000     $20,000,000    Extension
