Phillip Dorsett

The Seahawks signed Phillip Dorsett this offseason to be a lot receiver. Seattle did not have a true slot guy on the roster before signing Dorsett. At least, not one that is proven. 2019 draftee John Ursua appears to have all the skills to be a decent one, but he only had one catch in 2019.

Phillip Dorsett was a first-round draft pick in 2015 but he has never caught more than 33 passes in a season. The Seahawks will be Dorsett’s third team in six years, so not sticking with one team for very long might be a warning.

I don’t mean that Dorsett is bad in the locker room. There has never been any mention of that. But it could be that Dorsett’s skills were overvalued coming out of college and he will never translate into being a very good pro.

At the urging of Russell Wilson, the Seahawks signed Dorsett and will attempt to make him the third option at receiver after Tyler Lockett and D.K. Metcalf. But the problem for Dorsett is that he faces competition from David Moore, Ursua and 2020 draftees Stephen Sullivan and Freddie Swain.

Dorsett isn’t expensive but keeping him means Seattle has to let a young guy go. The Seahawks might decide the potential of Swain or Sullivan or even undrafted free agent Aaron Fuller is greater long-term than keeping Dorsett this year.
