Steve Largent

Steve Largent isn’t just one of the Seahawks greatest players and a Hall of Famer, he is one of the best receivers in NFL history. If he had played in the 2000s, Largent’s numbers would likely be twice what they already are and that is beyond the pale of imagination. Largent may be the best receiver ever and played on a team that was not a pass-first team.

This last bit is shown in the fact that Largent was named to just one Associated Press First-Team All-Pro team and that was in 1985 when he led the league with 1,287 receiving yards. To put that into contrast with today’s NFL, that number of yards would have ranked fourth. But he created those yards on just 79 receptions. Catching 79 passes last year would have put Largent 22nd in that number last year.

In 1985, he was sixth in receptions. If he had ranked first with 92 receptions (49ers running back Roger Craig led the NFL that year), Largent would have had exactly 1,500 yards.

Seattle just failed to use Largent enough. Four of his teams went to the playoffs in his 14 seasons. He played in seven postseason games and caught 23 passes. This is an average of 3 receptions per postseason game for possibly the best receiver in NFL history.

You do the math. Had the Seahawks thrown Largent the ball more in the playoffs, maybe they would have won Super Bowl.
