Cortez Kennedy

Perhaps the single greatest player in the history of the Seahawks is Cortez Kennedy. Kennedy had absolutely no help when he played and deserved so much better. He never complained about being on bad teams but no player of his talent should have suffered so much.

Between 1992 and 1994, Kennedy was a First-Team All-Pro selection. In those years, the Seahawks went a combined 14-34. Kennedy played his entire career with the Seahawks from 1990-2000. Out of his 11 seasons, Seattle finished last in their division four times. In only two of Kennedy’s years did Seattle finish with a winning record and both seasons were 9-7 years.

In 1999, the Seahawks won their division by going 9-7. This was the only time in Kennedy’s career that Seattle finished better than third in their division. Seattle lost the only playoff game Kennedy would play in 20-17, though he did have 2 tackles-for-loss.

How great was Kennedy and how bad were the teams he played on? In 1992, Kennedy had 14 sacks, four forced fumbles and 92 tackles and was named the AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year. Seattle, however, went 2-14 and were outscored by their opponents by 171 combined points.

Cortez Kennedy deserved to be on a lot better teams in his playing career. He was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 2012 but he never won the Super Bowl that he deserved to win.
