K.J. Wright

While Pro Football Focus graded K.J. Wright as having his worst season in some time in 2019, the truth is Wright was really good last year. He had his career-high in tackles (132), had 5 tackles for loss, had a career-high 11 passes defended and had 3 interceptions. Wright was good enough to earn a spot on the 2020 roster.

But Wright will also be 31 years old this season. He isn’t getting faster and when Seattle’s defenses were great in 2012 through 2015, they were built on speed. The Seahawks drafted Jordyn Brooks in the first round this year because he can tackle well but he is also really fast. He can replace Wright.

In fact, Wright might be too expensive to keep around, especially as Seattle still has hopes to sign Jadeveon Clowney before week one. Seattle needs pass rushers more than it needs a good linebacker as the Seahawks have a lot of linebackers and Brooks or Cody Barton can play Wright’s position.

Wright is owed $10 million this season is he in on the roster. Sure, Brooks’ inexperience will hurt Seattle at times this year, but not playing him and playing Wright hurts Seattle more long-term. Wright could be cut to make room for Brooks and clear cap space to sign a pass rusher.
