Seahawks replacement for Pete Carroll No. 2: Shane Waldron

The argument for Waldron is much the same as it is for Ben Johnson or Clint Hurtt. Waldron seemed a lot more comfortable in year two as offensive coordinator for the Seahawks than he did in year one. But in year two (2022), Waldron didn't have Russell Wilson and instead had Geno Smith as QB1. And Waldron did a remarkable job with Smith as Smith had easily the best season of his career.

Waldron is a great communicator and also is very good at running different plays out of the same formation. Did the Seahawks struggle against great defenses at times, such as the San Francisco 49ers? Yes, they did. And at times there seemed to be a lack of adjusting at halftime to what defenses were doing. But this also could be Seattle having young personnel, especialy at the offensive tackle spots.

Now in 2023 Waldron has more weapons at his disposal. Seattle took receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba so the team has a potentially consistently excellent WR3 for the first time in many years. Seattle also has more depth at running back. If Waldron is as good of an OC as I think he can be, the Seahawks offense is going to be a monster for opposing defenses to contend with.

Waldron is also just 43 years old so he should have a long coaching career in front of him. The issue with him might be that if Seattle succeeds as expected offensively in 2023, teams are going to start requesting interviews with him for their head coaching spots. If Seattle doesn't make Waldron an HC soon, some other team very likely will.
