Seattle Seahawks free agency roundup for Monday March 9th

Free agency doesn’t technically begin until Tuesday. Teams got an early start this weekend during the “legal tampering” period, and players were getting locked up all over the league.

More from Seattle Seahawks News

There was so much news and movement that it was nearly impossible to keep up with it all. To try and help keep you head from spinning from all the news, here is a list of most of the moves that matter for the Seattle Seahawks.

  • The big news from this weekend was that Byron Maxwell is leaving Seattle and signing with the Philadelphia Eagles.
  • The Seahawks signed cornerback Will Blackmon. This is a move that made too much sense not to happen. It made so much sense that I wrote about it a week ago.
  • The Seahawks did not tender offers to Steven Schilling, Bryan Walters and Richardo Lockette. All three will become unrestricted free agents on Tuesday.
  • Mike Morgan is a restricted free agent that the Seahawks are expected to retain. They have not officially tendered him a contract yet, which suggests that the two sides are negotiating a multi-year deal. This news prompted this awesome exchange on twitter:
  • The Seahawks released Jesse Williams and Garret Scott. Both draft picks whose careers never got a chance to begin because of health issues. With Williams it was his knee, while Scott had a heart condition. Both cleared waivers, and are likely done as football players.
  • The Houston Texans released wide receiver Andre Johnson. He will definitely be on Seattle’s radar, but that doesn’t mean he’ll sign here. Johnson is likely to have a large number of interested teams.
  • Tight end Julius Thomas is still available. Reportedly the finalists are Seattle and Jacksonville. The Jags have much more cap space and are presumably offering a much larger contract. He is expected to sign with Jacksonville soon.
  • If the Seahawks do miss out on Thomas, expect them to make a big push on Jordan Cameron.
  • Brandon Bowner was briefly allowed by the Patriots to begin feeling out the market should he become available. The Patriots re-signed McCourty and were working to re-sign Revis. If that happened, they likely would have cut Browner. Instead, Revis will hit the open market, and Browner should stay in New England.
  • The San Francisco 49ers are currently hemorrhaging talent, but there is so much going on in Santa Clara that it deserves its own article. More on that to come.
